Success stories from IE University’s political science programs

Lucia and Paula are helping shape the future of politics. Read all about their journeys, the lessons they’ve learned and the challenges they face in a career in politics.

Have you ever wondered about success stories from IE University’s political science programs? Two of our alumni are already having an impact beyond the classroom. Lucia Asenjo and Paula Oliver, both graduates of the IE School of Economics, Politics & Global Affairs, have transferred their skills into the real world. Here’s a look at their experience.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your current role in the political sector?

Lucia: Currently, I work at the Ministry of Defense of Georgia in the Department of Reforms and Risk Management. My role involves analyzing and managing risks associated with defense reforms, and ensuring that our strategies align with national security goals.

Paula: I am a former Dual Degree in Business Administration & International Relations student, from Spain. In my role as Policy Assistant, I support EU Delegations in the implementation of Global Gateway, the EU’s strategy for its engagement abroad. However, I am about to transition to a new role and become a Research Assistant for European Policy and Spanish Foreign Policy in Elcano Royal Institute, Spain’s leading IR think tank.

What motivated you to pursue a career in politics?

Lucia: My motivation to pursue a career in politics stemmed from a deep-seated desire to contribute to meaningful change and governance. Growing up, I was always fascinated by how policies and international relations shape societies.

Paula: I have always had a sense of public service vocation. However, I have never been interested in partisan politics or joining a political party. Thus, I have navigated through research institutions, advocacy groups and the public administration.

How did your experience at IE University prepare you for your career in politics?

Lucia: The comprehensive curriculum and engaging discussions provided me with a solid foundation in international relations and political theory. Additionally, the emphasis on practical skills and critical thinking equipped me to tackle complex issues in the political sector effectively.

Paula: IE prepared me in three ways: first, with insights on additional career paths that I did not know about; second, it also spurred my passion for EU policy; and third, it taught me the importance of being proactive, constructive, adaptable, juggling multiple tasks and assignments at the same time, while communicating with empathy and assertiveness.

Were there any specific courses, professors, or projects at IE University that particularly influenced your career path?

Lucia: The course on International Political Economy broadened my understanding of global economic policies, while the classes on Conflict Resolution provided me with valuable insights into negotiation and diplomacy. Additionally, the group project on global governance was particularly influential, as it highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Paula: First, the International Unplugged course on the European Union. Second, Topics in Foreign Policy. Third, International Monetary Theory. There were also specific professors who I believed made a mark on me: Miguel Otero, who became my thesis supervisor and allowed me to intern in Elcano Royal Institute; and Susana Torres, who had the difficult task of teaching us how to engage with complex arguments and think critically when we had just left high school.

During their time at IE University, Lucia and Paula gained invaluable education and experience, setting themselves up for future success. Their time with us has been a defining chapter in their personal and professional journeys.
