Veronica Alvarez, after finishing her degree, was accepted in United Way Worldwide to work in Digital Services, and shares her experience with us:
What company and department are you working in?
United Way Worldwide, Digital Services.
How was the recruiting process—steps, tests, interviews?
I found the application on the organization’s website, sent out my CV and cover letter, and was contacted for an interview. A few days later I heard back from the interviewer who offered me the position.
How are you impacting the company you work at?
I have been given the freedom to build my own projects within the organization, ranging from leading conversations on diversity and inclusion in the workplace to creating content directed at increasing donations.
What are the most important things you have learned in your work?
I have learned about the importance of having a diverse team in terms of gender, ethnicity, and beliefs. This way, when it comes to making decisions, no one is left behind.
What are the most relevant skills you use in your day-to-day?
Clear communication within the team, adaptability and having a lot of confidence in yourself and your work.
How has having entrepreneurial capacity helped you to achieve professional success?
It has made me more innovative with my ideas for projects at work.
If you work in an international environment, what are the challenges you face?
I don’t really see an international environment as a challenge but rather as an opportunity for learning. Meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures is very enriching.
What do you like the most about the company you work for and the sector?
The working environment is extremely positive. Everyone is working there out of goodwill and is willing to make a meaningful impact on society. Everyone is also very open to teaching.
What are your long-term career objectives?
In the long term, I want to guide my career path towards international development and policy making.
What tips or advice would you give to other students applying for a job?
The best advice I can give is to be patient and persistent. Even if it may seem as if you will never get a job, you will.
