A different level of education at a “university for everyone”

I’m someone who relishes learning from my own mistakes, and I use that learning to fuel my passion for marketing and the world of social media. My main interest is in perfecting the user experience, but marketing is a broad role, with plenty of specializations to choose from, so I’d recommend anybody interested in the sector to experience all the different areas they’re curious about.

Why did you choose the Bachelor in Communication and Digital Media at IE University?

I chose the program as it looked like a very innovative course compared to what other universities were presenting. I even considered business, but focusing on communications allowed me to be directly specialized in something already, instead of choosing a very general degree. Even now, communications opportunities are growing and there are so many possible outcomes from the field. I thought it was the perfect fit.

So how did your experience at IE University prepare you for your professional career?

IE University prepared me through practical projects, firsthand teaching advice from professionals in my industry with loads of real-world experience, advice and knowledge. They also helped me to connect with people from different nationalities which, in the end, improved, my standards in the languages I was learning. Therefore I had more to add to my resume, and better vocabulary at work in another way.

Tell us about your current work at Empanadas Malvón.

I specialize in marketing that is specifically directed at delivery. By that I mean I’m responsible for the promotions we do with Glovo, Uber, Just Eat and our own delivery platform. My goal with this part of the job is to understand the most effective promotions in order to attract new clients and maintain the current ones, while at the same time try to develop our own delivery platform and make it the channel with the most weight over the company’s orders and billing. Within these tasks, there’s constant communication with the franchisors, the stores themselves, and our account managers on each platform.

So what competitive advantage did studying at IE University provide you?

IE University, apart from the amazing enriching experience it provides, is also at a point where it elevates your resume above others. The university reached a certain level of recognition where scouts look specifically for professionals that come from the institution. The education level the faculty provides its members is so widely acknowledged, both through rankings and word of mouth, that companies become more interested in hiring just because of the name of the university and the standard of professionalism that comes out of it.

Do you have any advice for IE University students and alumni who are looking to pursue a marketing career?

Try always to be up to date on trends, what’s happening with the world and how you can take advantage of that constant flow of information. Marketing is a job done at a fast pace; something minor that’s relevant today might not be tomorrow. So always try to stay sharp and show you know your information and how to make use of it.

What skills do you consider are needed to succeed in your field?

I’d say above all, to be a good communicator. You also need to be a fast learner and to be able to work at a fast pace too. And I’d say it’s important to follow trends as well as set them, which leads to another quality you need; adaptability. You also need to be a team player and a good listener.

Tell us about the IE University alumni community and the impact they’ve had on your life and/or career.

Since I graduated so recently, I can’t yet say how the IE Alumni community might affect me. However, I do see plenty of initiative from the university to keep in touch. So I’m sure I’ll be very happy with the future initiatives.

If someone were considering going to IE University, what would you tell them?

I would encourage them to apply. IE University has diversity, is innovative, and is full of experienced individuals and opportunities. It’s a university for everyone who wants to experience a different level of education, with practical skills.
