IEUMUN 2024: The international model UN where diplomacy meets community

A celebration of connection and diplomacy, IEUMUN 2024 brought together participants for debates, cultural experiences and moments that will stay with them forever.

What happens when extraordinary individuals from around the world come together to debate, connect and share unforgettable experiences? You get IEUMUN 2024. This year marked the fifth edition of Europe’s largest international model UN conference, hosted right here, at the IE Tower in Madrid.

Here are the highlights: Delegates participated in thought-provoking debates, attended a glamorous gala at the Reina Sofía Museum and visited UNICEF’s headquarters in Madrid. The latter added layers of cultural and real-world engagement to the experience. With over 400 delegates from 100+ universities and 50 countries, it was a whirlwind of culture, ideas and unforgettable moments.

14 committees, endless opportunities

At IE University’s international model UN, every committee is like its own mini-world. But this year, two stood out for their creativity. The Spanish-speaking Olympic Committee debated the next host city for the Olympics in a fascinating display of multilingual diplomacy. Meanwhile, a four-cabinet crisis on “Civilization Building in Ancient China” had participants diving headfirst into history, strategy and storytelling. Who says diplomacy can’t be fun?

The power of policy

“The resolutions you pass echo real-world efforts to find common ground,” said Borja Santos, Vice-Dean of the IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs, during the opening ceremony. “You are coming up with ideas that might help many achieve their dreams.”

Nowhere was this more evident than in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). With a focus on “The Situation in the Sahel,” delegates wrestled with topics like insurgent groups, peacekeeping missions and climate change. Guided by chairs who meticulously prepared study guides, the debates were both rigorous and solution-driven.

The power of community

“Beyond the valuable learning from these debates and simulations, the true impact lies in the power of community,” said Elisa Hicks, Executive Director of Campus Life, during her closing remarks. “You can feel it in this auditorium—you are part of something bigger.”

Her words ran true. Delegates didn’t just debate, they bonded. The social events provided a chance to meet like-minded peers from around the world. As one participant said, “The socials are where you connect on a human level, beyond the formalities that come with the event.”

The power of dance?

Accion por la Musica

Yes, you read that right. It all began during the opening ceremony, when the kids from Acción por la Música took the stage with their instruments. What started as a classical performance gradually transformed into a lively, folksy rhythm that swept through the room. Slowly but surely, the audience rose to their feet, and before long, the entire auditorium erupted into an impromptu dance session.

Surprising? Sure. Memorable? Absolutely. And there was a deeper reason behind the fun—a portion of this year’s proceeds supported Acción por la Música, a nonprofit using music to combat child poverty and promote inclusion. It was a joyful reminder that IEUMUN’s mission extends far beyond debate.

Gala at the Reina Sofía

This year’s delegates had the unique opportunity to attend a gala hosted at the Reina Sofía Museum. Surrounded by world-renowned art and a refined atmosphere, participants celebrated their achievements and reflected on the conference’s impact. The evening was a perfect blend of culture, elegance and camaraderie, marking a memorable highlight of the event.

Behind the scenes: What it’s like to be chair at an international Model UN

For many, IEUMUN isn’t just an international Model UN; it’s a life-changing experience. One chair of the UNSC shared how it’s shaped their career aspirations. “MUN taught me invaluable skills like leadership, critical thinking and negotiation,” they said. “Debating security issues made me realize I want to pursue a career in intelligence and security, where my data analytics background can truly make an impact.”

Their favorite part? Creating the detailed study guide that anchored debates on the Sahel. And despite the hard work, moments like seeing the Secretary-General’s emotional closing speech made it all worthwhile. “Seeing her overwhelmed with emotion reminded me of how far we’ve come as a community.”

IEUMUN isn’t just about acing debates; it’s about building connections, exploring your passions and discovering new career paths. It’s a space where young leaders come together to imagine a better world.
