Letting go, but staying connected: How IE University supports families

Behind the excitement of a student’s journey is a family making it all possible. That’s why we partner closely with parents to make their child’s journey at IE University both rewarding and reassuring.

Letting go is never easy. For families, it’s about trust, and the hope that their child will find a place where they feel supported and safe. We understand how hard it can feel to send your child to study away from home. That’s why we at IE University work to make that transition as reassuring as possible for both students and parents.

What parents often ask us

Every student’s journey is different, of course. But there are some common concerns on which parents of pretty much any prospective candidate want to reassure themselves.

Spain is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Europe and the world. Madrid is often cited as one of the safest large cities in Europe, and Segovia one of the safest cities in Spain. The capital is known as a highly cosmopolitan and inclusive city.

In any case, as you’d expect, our facilities in both Madrid and Segovia feature strong safety measures. This includes CCTV cameras and on-site security staff.

The institution has a dedicated department, the Center for Health & Well-being, devoted to enhancing student welfare. The center offers seminars, workshops, courses, activities and other resources designed to give our students the tools to prosper.

We also offer unlimited, one-to-one guidance counseling sessions and up to eight mental health counseling sessions with clinical psychologists per year to offer support for any problems students may face.

IE University alumni graduate with high employability, and this shows in our career report. Some 95% of job seekers from the undergraduate Class of 2024 are currently working, with 385 companies recruiting at least one of our graduates.

We have over 1,900 professors at our university across all five schools. They come from diverse backgrounds and are all highly experienced in the fields they teach. They’re accessible to students and are open to collaboration and career guidance. You can read about them on our faculty page.

Staying connected as families

IE University supports families in a variety of ways, ensuring they stay connected and live the experience together

Through both the Parents & Families Newsletter and the Driving Innovation blog, parents can get the latest news about student life, events and career outcomes. They can also receive emails with in-depth financial aid and visa information.

For a more personal approach, our Parent Ambassadors can help support families through their university decision process.

These are parents of current students, located throughout the world, who share their own experiences and answer any questions you may have.

If you want to speak to IE University representatives, you can contact the Parents Helpline at any time. We also have offices throughout the world—including the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia—with contacts that offer guidance and help.

Opportunities to experience IE University firsthand

IE University holds a variety of events to keep families connected and help parents get to know us better.

Prospective students and their families can attend an Open House at both our Madrid and Segovia locations. There, you’ll get to know all about IE University, from academic programs to financial aid to housing. You’ll meet current students and can attend workshops and tours of our institution in one or both cities.

Our Parent Conference and other events hosted by different departments allow parents of new students to attend talks, explore the institution and meet their children’s professors and other parents.

Families of admitted and current students can attend our Parents’ Weekend, held once a year. We offer workshops explaining our teaching methodologies, conferences and leisure activities for parents to get to know each other and come together as a community.

Parents’ perspectives: what they’ve seen

For many families, the most meaningful part of the university journey is watching their children change in ways they didn’t fully expect. Parents often describe a shift that’s both subtle and profound. Students return home more confident, more self-aware, and increasingly capable of navigating life on their own.

Some of our current IE University parents have shared how they feel their children have grown as people, and have felt supported throughout their experience.

My son was in charge of a charity club meeting and he was completely different from who he was two years ago. I’m really proud of the person he’s becoming: more assertive, less afraid of risks and learns fast from failures,” said Carlos Hinchado, who actually has two children studying dual degrees at IE University.

Ramin Fattahian has also seen a transformation in his son. “He’s become very disciplined. He’s dedicated to his classes and his studies. And best of all, he feels like he belongs.

Sven Grevstad agrees. “The professors here are really preparing them for the real world. Our experience so far has been very positive,” he said.

A shared journey

Sending your child off to study is exciting and emotional. It’s all about believing in their potential to find somewhere that feels like home. We’re proud to give students the tools to thrive and parents the peace of mind that their children are cared for and supported.

All in all, our commitment to transparency, safety and well-being means that families can feel confident knowing their children are thriving both personally and academically. Because at IE University, parents are part of the journey, too.
