Humanities provide the architecture for complex problem-solving
Although Dr Goretti González came from a business-minded family, she says that the humanities were her true calling. However, since studying the humanities, she’s gained an understanding of how the two overlap. She explains that the humanities are the bedrock of humanity; they foster critical thinking and invite us to ask “What if?”
In our digital world, Goretti believes the humanities are more important than ever before. We’ve always had technology and now, thanks to innovations such as AI, technology’s becoming more powerful and can complete many human jobs. However, what AI can’t replicate are our human skills: critical thinking, curiosity and creativity. That’s where the humanities come in—our human skills are what differentiates us from machines.
In fact, she explains, institutions have forecast that skills fostered through the humanities will be the most in-demand skills of the future. Now’s the time for students to immerse themselves in the humanities.
A new program for a new skill set
The new Bachelor in Humanities encourages students to embrace the humanities and technology, learning how the two disciplines complement each other. The Bachelor in Humanities instills hard and soft skills for positive social impact, teaching analytical and digital competencies alongside traditional humanistic areas of focus.
What’s more, the program is led by a faculty of experts. Comprising leading academics and industry practitioners, students gain firsthand insights into how the humanities are impacting the worlds of business and technology. Students also benefit from UNESCO’s vast knowledge and expertise as part of the program, thanks to IE University’s links with the organization. Additionally, Goretti explains how students have a wealth of extracurricular activities to choose from to further explore the humanities, from IEU Labs to student-led clubs.
The humanities for impact
As we make technological advancements, there will always be a need for a skilled workforce who can use their human skills to ensure we’re using technology for good. The humanities are everywhere and as such, each and every industry demands humanities graduates to help them align their work with real-world challenges.
Goretti explains that 60% of American CEOs hail from a humanities background. Moreover, nearly one-third of Fortune 500 leaders have a degree in the humanities. The sky’s the limit when it comes to a career in the humanities. Students have endless opportunities depending on which area of the humanities interests them most, and these roles will continue developing as our human skills become more important.
