Bringing together digital and physical data through the Internet of Things

The data which is stored on physical devices like home appliances and vehicles is currently being collected and deposited into a huge network known as the Internet of Things (IoT). Not only will this help to bridge the gap between digital and physical data, but it will increase efficiency within organizations.

Specialists estimate that the IoT will consist of approximately 30 billion objects by 2020, so it’s really important to have fresh talent with the expertise to process the data.

Understanding dark data

Dark data is information that is collected through different computer network operations that tends to be stored instead of being used to derive insights. Sometimes companies aren’t even aware that dark data is being collected.

Organizations have started to realize the importance of dark data as a tool for discovering insights into previous years’ performance, cost reduction and revenue creation.

Moving data into the cloud

Since many companies are finding it difficult to employ sufficient numbers of data and business analytics staff, many will be turning to the cloud as a non-physical processing platform, therefore reducing their reliance on data centers.

One upside to this is that the companies will not be locked into contracts to physical equipment. It also reduces spending and gives the users greater flexibility and access to data.

Tightening data security permissions

In a bid to prevent the unauthorized copy or theft of documents, companies are getting tough on data access permissions. Each user wishing to access specific data will have to have the correct permissions to access it. This is no small task. It will mean adjusting policies and creating new technology to detect unapproved access.

AI pattern recognition

Artificial Intelligence pattern recognition is being tested by Facebook to scan posts to identify individuals potentially suffering from serious mental health issue. This is just one of the many ways AI is being applied today. Companies are particularly interested in how AI can be used to sort large data batches. As this technology becomes more advanced with each passing day, it’ll be interesting to see where AI takes us in the business world and what it will mean for our society as a whole.
