The best jobs of 2018 are in Data Science

2012 was a good year for data scientists. Harvard Business Review published an article titled “Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century”.

So far, 2018 is proving to be a good year for the profession, too. Data scientist topped Glassdoor’s list of the 50 best jobs in America for the third year in a row.

Sexiness aside, what makes data scientists so special? According to Glassdoor, it’s a combination of the profession’s median annual base salary ($110,000), the number of job openings available (nearly 5,000), and data scientists’ overall job satisfaction (high!). These are the factors that Glassdoor weighs when creating its rankings.

Data Science

If this sounds like it could be your dream job, then you’re in the right place. Graduates of IE University’s Dual Degree in Business Administration + Data and Business Analytics are uniquely prepared to enter and succeed in this prestigious profession. The program’s dual focus on teaching effective management techniques and solid analytical skills will allow you to harness the power of data to help your company make smarter decisions and, in turn, better products and services. Better yet, countless opportunities to build personal connections with leaders in the corporate world through internships, exchange programs, and conferences will help you hit the ground running upon graduation.

This solid foundation of technical know-how and leadership ability is essential preparation for the wide range of projects that data scientists take on. According to another Harvard Business Review article, these projects may include “the massive online experimental frameworks for product development at booking.com and Etsy, the methods Buzzfeed uses to implement a multi-armed bandit solution for headline optimization, and the impact machine learning has on business decisions at Airbnb.”

However, even if working as a data scientist isn’t your calling, the Dual Degree in Business Administration + Data and Business Analytics is still a valuable tool to get your foot in the door of another highly satisfying profession. Both data and business are growing fields in the corporate world, and your skills will be highly desirable and useful in any job you may choose.

DevOps Engineer – #2

DevOps Engineers, boasting a median annual base salary of $105,000, have a unique set of responsibilities that span from big-picture assignments to highly detail-oriented tasks. For instance, they may build cloud-based infrastructure from scratch one day, and then collaborate with an IT department to improve performance, integration, and security the next. According to software company Puppet, the top three skills essential for success as a DevOps Engineer are coding, process re-engineering, and communicating with others. Graduates of the Dual Degree in Business Administration + Data and Business Analytics spend four years honing these very skills through foundational courses in multiple disciplines at the beginning of the program and, later, through more specialized courses in subjects such as data analytics, big data technologies, innovation, and business.

Mobile Developer – #8

If you think you need a degree in Computer Science to be a developer, think again! The Dual Degree in Business Administration + Data and Business Analytics is an ambitious program that includes rigorous programming courses, and graduates leave fully prepared to take on a highly technical role like this one. Mobile developers are responsible for all stages of software development, from analyzing consumer needs to delivering a final, high-quality digital experience. They also hold meetings with clients, in order to refine their products and solicit feedback on the software that they create. These responsibilities give IE University graduates the perfect opportunity to flex their analytical skills and management abilities simultaneously.

Marketing Manager – #3

Marketing managers are said to have the third best job in America. This comes as little surprise considering the broad reach of their work—some estimates suggest that we see as many as 10,000 brand messages per day. Given the highly saturated nature of today’s marketing landscape, designing effective and meaningful ad campaigns with lasting impact on consumers is trickier than ever. This is where data science comes in. Graduates of IE University’s dual degree program are trained to use cutting-edge technologies to collect, manage, analyze, and extract actionable insights from data. These insights can then be used to inform and significantly increase the efficacy of marketing campaigns, boosting your company’s overall performance and vitality.
