Study in Spain: Day Trip to La Granja

In the area surrounding Segovia, there are endless options for day trips and excursions with friends. One of our favorite spots is La Granja.

In the area surrounding Segovia, there are endless options for day trips and excursions with friends. One of our favorite spots is La Granja de San Ildefonso, a stunning village bordering the Sierra de Guadarrama. The winding cobblestone streets and enchanting rural beauty make La Granja a great place to spend the day.

By car, La Granja is less than 15 minutes from the center of Segovia. If you’re traveling via public transportation, you can catch a bus from the Segovia bus station on Calle Ezequiel González every 45 minutes. After a 20 minute bus ride, you’ll arrive at the Puerta de la Reina stop at the gates of La Granja.

Exploring the landmarks

La Granja is famous for its gorgeous palace gardens, originally inspired by the gardens at the French palace of Versailles. Located next to the former summer residence of the King of Spain, the gardens have many beautiful fountains and luscious flora. Depending on the season, you can also enter the ground floor of the palace and explore this historic building.

The breathtaking scenery you’ll discover in the gardens is sure to be a highlight of your trip to La Granja. Discover the elaborate 18th-century sculptures and marvel at the palace architecture without spending a dime.

Once you’ve made your way through the gardens, a good next stop is the glass factory. Admission is €5, and it’s sure to be an interesting adventure! This factory-turned-museum was once thought to be one of the most modern and advanced installations of its time. As you wander around the museum, you’ll discover the craft of glassmaking, and even see a demonstration on how glassmaking artisans work.

The museum has a number of fascinating exhibitions, including a collection of stained glass from the 18th and 19th centuries, and a display on glass-blowing techniques. There’s plenty to discover, and we’re positive you’ll learn something new. Be sure to check out the museum Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 15:00.

Lunch Time!

After all that exploring, you’re sure to have worked up quite an appetite. Check out the Pizzeria Dumbo, a favorite among locals with some of the best pizza in the area. If you’re looking for something more traditionally Spanish, try El Habito or Casa Zaca. There are also some great spots for picnics, so pack a bocadillo if you’re after a more relaxed, informal culinary experience. After lunch, get some hot chocolate with churros in one of the many cafés in the area.

Discover the natural and historic beauty of La Granja

There is lots more to see once you’ve finished your lunch. La Granja has some beautiful churches—a must-see for the architecture enthusiasts in the group! For something closer to nature, there is a small lake a short drive north of La Granja. During the hot summer months, pack your bathing suit for a refreshing swim in the mountain lake. The surrounding area is also great for hiking and exploring nature.

With good company and lovely weather, you’ll have a wonderful time. So round up your friends and start planning your trip to La Granja!
