Making sweet melodies and memories at IE Music Club

Our extensive range of clubs allows students to disconnect from their daily routines and reconnect with their passions. In fourth-year business administration and law student Carla Costa’s case, that’s music.

Why did you join the IE Music Club?

I’ve always been passionate about music and dance, particularly ballet. I started ballet when I was four and I still do it to this day. Ever since I was little, I’ve always held performances for my family and friends. So when I first arrived at IE University, I knew I wanted to find a group that shared the same passion for music.

It’s always been a dream of mine to become a singer, and I’ve been taking classes for a year and a half now. Also, when I started university, all of my friends played the guitar. I really wanted to learn to play too, and so I started learning on my own this summer. I’ve also begun to play the piano and am aiming to get past a beginner’s level. I compose songs, too, and would love to upload them to Spotify one day. During quarantine, one of my realizations was that I want to do something with music in my future, which is why I want to do my thesis on a topic related to the music industry.

Music transports me and helps me escape from my routine. It makes me happy and is an essential part of my life.

What’s the process like for joining the club?

The club holds auditions at the beginning of the academic year in September. I had to sing in front of the judges, who are IE University students and organizers of the club. Luckily, they liked my performance and I became a member of the music community.

What does the IE Music Club do?

The club has around 60 members, but I’m sure there are more promising musicians at IE University that are maybe too shy to demonstrate their skills! The club tries to meet up once a week to have a jam session at BoXinBox studios, and we also prepare and rehearse for future events.

How would you describe your experience as a member?

It’s been amazing so far. In 2019, I was able to perform a solo on IE Day, as well as a song with a group. It was so much fun! This year, I also played during IE University’s opening event, which was an incredible experience. Lastly, the Lebanon Club has asked us to do a virtual performance to raise money for the recent explosions, which was really rewarding.

Why would you recommend IE Music Club to other students?

It’s a tremendous experience where you can share your passion with other people who love music as much as you do. It’s always fascinating meeting people with different music tastes and experiences, as it pushes you to explore different sides of music as well as interesting instruments. I would say to other students: don’t be shy to do what you enjoy. Even if you don’t like performing in front of a crowd, I bet you’ll have a great time jamming with others!

Also, you get to become part of a community that is always looking to create a cool and chill environment. It’s incredibly worthwhile, too, as you get to join initiatives to raise funds through live concerts.

If Carla’s experience sounds like music to your ears, then sign up to the IE Music Club here. They’d love to hear from you!

María is a BBA student in Madrid. She was born in Valencia, Spain, but have lived in Madrid for ten years now. Although she has never had the chance to live outside of Spain, she has traveled abroad several times and love to experience different cultures.

In high school, she moved from Valencia to Madrid, where she spent her last two years at a British school called Hastings School. There, she completed my A-Level exams.

She chose IE University since she has always been in international academic environments. Being in the British education system, she enjoyed getting to know people from other countries. IE University gives you the opportunity to study in an international environment while living in Spain.

This year, she decided to take French classes offered by IE University. She truly enjoyed the course, which was taught by great professors.

She has worked as an intern in IE University’s marketing department. She did so for a month where she learned many things that will help inform her future career. As an intern, she worked with undergraduate programs and develop materials for IE University websites, blogs, student life, and other inbound marketing initiatives.

Her favorite hobby is dancing. She started ballet at the age of two, following the Royal Academy of Dance curriculum. She is currently taking Broadway jazz classes and drama lessons. In her drama classes, they have recently been preparing for the musical Mamma Mia. Apart from acting and dancing, she also loves outdoor activities like skiing, sailing, traveling, and photography.”
