Originally from South Africa and having graduated high school in Oman, Roché brought a unique international perspective to her Bachelor in Architectural Studies at IE University before going on to build a global architecture career.
Now an alum, her path to international architecture took flight when IE Foundation awarded her the Junior Advisory Board Scholarship, covering 80% of her tuition. This support transformed Roché’s dream of studying abroad into reality and laid the foundation for her global career prospects.
Roché’s architecture internships
During her undergraduate studies, Roché’s understanding of architecture was shaped by both academic and practical experiences. For example, she completed four architecture internships over the course of the program, divided between the architectural industry and positions within the university itself. These hands-on experiences proved invaluable in bridging the gap between academic theory and professional practice.
Beyond that, IE School of Architecture & Design enriched Roché’s education by bringing industry professionals into the classroom as both lecturers and jurors for project presentations. Such exposure gave Roché invaluable insights into the real world of architecture she would soon encounter.
In her opinion, IE University’s support extended far beyond academics. The IE Talent & Careers team was instrumental in managing the logistics and legal requirements for her internships, while the student support teams helped Roché navigate some of Spain’s complex bureaucracy.
Today, Roché is working on a master’s program in architecture studies in Valencia. Since Spanish architects require a master’s-level education, this was a strategic move to certify her to practice architecture anywhere in the country.
After graduation, her plans involve joining an architectural firm to gain more expertise in renovation and restoration. She is also considering pursuing a PhD, drawn by Spain’s abundant opportunities in architectural research.
Is architecture a good career? Opportunities for a career in architecture
According to Roché, architects based in Spain have exciting job prospects since prominent global firms maintain offices nationwide. However, though she has planted strong professional roots in Spain, Roché keeps an open mind about her future; she may consider possibilities across Europe or even think about returning to South Africa. Such flexibility demonstrates how IE University’s international education can truly expand students’ options.
Roché’s journey exemplifies how IE University’s comprehensive support system—from scholarship funding to career guidance—creates pathways to global professional success. Through a combination of practical experience, industry exposure and academic excellence, Roché’s IE University experience has equipped her with the tools needed to pursue an architectural career anywhere in the world.
