Andrea Caruso: Redefining interior design education at IE University

Internationally acclaimed designer Andrea Caruso brings his expertise and passion for innovation to IE University. Here’s what he has to say about the Interior Design track and how it’s shaping the next generation of creative leaders.

At IE University, we take great pride in our faculty, an assembly of great and diverse minds that have come together from all over the world to push the boundaries of traditional education. One such great mind is Andrea Caruso, the newly appointed Academic Coordinator for the Bachelor in Design: Interior Design track. Andrea comes with great professional experience and progressive thinking toward interior-design education. He truly epitomizes our mission here at IE University: shaping the responsible leaders of tomorrow through innovative knowledge delivered by an extraordinary team of scholars and industry experts.

A legacy of excellence in design

Andrea Caruso’s journey in the world of design began in Italy. It’s no wonder this is where the rich heritage of craftsmanship and architectural innovation inspired his creative path. From Turin to Milan and eventually to Madrid, he honed his craft, working in many different disciplines and embracing design as a universal language. He cofounded Ciszak Dalmas, a Madrid-based design studio celebrated for its ability to blend traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics. His work at the studio—spanning furniture, interior design and product design—has earned international recognition, reinforcing his belief in the transformative power of design. As Andrea, seen on the right side of the photo, says:

This professional experience translates effortlessly into his role at the IE School of Architecture & Design, where he channels this ethos into his teaching. Thus inspiring students to think beyond aesthetics and view design as a tool for storytelling, problem-solving and cultural influence.

What sets the Interior Design track apart?

The Bachelor in Design: Interior Design track offers a unique educational experience. Under Andrea’s leadership, the program takes a holistic approach to interior design, equipping students with technical skills and theoretical knowledge, but also creative problem-solving abilities and business acumen. This interdisciplinary foundation prepares graduates to thrive in a variety of career paths, from space planning and exhibition design to positions at the forefront of sustainability and technology.

“Interior design today is about crafting meaningful, innovative and sustainable experiences,” Andrea explains. The program’s curriculum embodies this vision, blending traditional design principles with modern trends. Students learn about multifunctional spaces, eco-conscious design, and the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. At the same time, they gain practical experience through resources like the IE University Fab Lab and a network of global industry connections.

A unique learning environment

But what truly sets the Interior Design track apart is its commitment to experiential learning. Examples of this are initiatives like sustainable material selection or advanced tools like 3D modeling.

Andrea leverages this learning environment to teach his students curiosity and resilience. Whether it’s reimagining urban living spaces or designing for the metaverse, students are encouraged to push boundaries and leave a lasting impact on the world of interior design.

Interior design jobs available to graduates

The opportunities awaiting graduates of the Interior Design track are as diverse as the program itself. Career options include:

  • Interior designer
  • Space planner
  • Set designer
  • Exhibition designer
  • Lighting consultant
  • Acoustic specialist
  • Virtual and augmented reality space designer

Graduates may also explore entrepreneurial ventures or roles in related fields like retail design, hospitality and real estate development.

“The industry is evolving rapidly,” Andrea notes. “We want to prepare students not only for the opportunities of today but for the challenges and possibilities that lie ahead.” This vision aligns with IE University’s broader commitment to nurturing innovation and adaptability in its graduates.

A faculty of unparalleled expertise

Indeed, Andrea Caruso’s appointment underscores IE University’s dedication to providing students with access to exceptional educators who are leaders in their fields. Many faculty members, like Andrea, bring extensive professional experience and a passion for staying ahead of industry trends to class. As a result, this all comes together to create a dynamic learning environment where students are constantly challenged and inspired by their teachers.

So as Andrea reflects on his journey and the vision he has for the program, his message to students is clear: “Stay curious, take risks and create boldly. Your ideas have the power to reshape spaces, inspire people and really make a difference.” With mentors like Andrea Caruso guiding the way, the future of interior design at IE University looks brighter than ever.
