In October 2012, an article written in the Harvard Business Review claimed that data scientist would be the sexiest job of the 21st century. Five years after this article was published, data science continues to grow professionally and academically, as an increasing number of incoming university students pursue this field of study.
Following the creation of our new IE University Bachelor in Data and Business Analytics, we decided to explore what a career in data science means, and what it is that makes this profession so sexy.
Data and Business Analytics is one of the most sought-after professions
For the second year in a row, data and business analytics has claimed the top spot on Glassdoor’s list of the 50 best jobs in America. In addition to being one of the fastest growing professions, Glassdoor measured a high overall job score (4.8 out of 5) and an impressive job satisfaction score (4.4 out of 5). With a median base salary of $110,000 USD, it’s not hard to see why data and business analytics is becoming such a popular field of study!
The best universities in the world are implementing data and business analytics programs
A study conducted by CareerCast.com found that careers in data science have the best growth potential over the next 7 years. Despite the fact that data scientists are in high demand, companies are finding it hard to fill the positions. Statistics from rjmetrics.com show that, over the past four years, only 50% of the positions of data scientist were successfully filled.
´
In the beginning, these data scientist positions were filled by people with a background in statistics, data analysis, mathematics, information science, or computer science. However, data science works to combine these areas in order to produce an individual who is able to consider data sets from a variety of perspectives. These professionals also need to be able to effectively lead and manage teams, and must have highly developed soft skills. Top international universities, IE University included, have taken note of the lack of new grads able to fill these positions, and have begun implementing data science undergraduate programs in order to meet this market demand.
The field of data science is in constant evolution
Since data science is such a new field, it has not yet established a strict identity. This means that data scientists are free to push the limits of the profession, and discover new areas of study and exploration. Thanks to this experimental, innovative outlook, the possibilities for the future of this field are seemingly limitless.
Students of data science have plenty of options when it comes to finding a career path that best suits their needs. Here are just a few examples of what you can do with your Bachelor in Data Science from IEU:
