A first-year student on IE University, Liquid Learning and creating unforgettable memories

Fondo logo E
Edwin Marmolejos is a 17-year-old, first-year student of the Dual Degree in Business Administration & Data and Business Analytics. He was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, where he stayed until his senior year of high school, which he spent in the United States. Now, he’s broadening his horizons once more, having recently moved to Segovia in Spain.

Although he hasn’t been on campus for long, Edwin is already finding the experience here to be eye opening. We sat down with him to find out a little bit about his impressions of IE University so far—including the dynamic new Liquid Learning format.

What made you decide to come to IE University?

I chose IE University because of the strong business program and the institution’s reputation for innovative thinking. I believe that coming here will also allow me to travel to different places, explore a variety of cultures and create unforgettable memories. While I haven’t spent a lot of time in Segovia, I can tell that it’s a wonderful city to live and study in. During my first month, I’ve been able to meet a lot of people, while always respecting the COVID-19 guidelines. It’s the first time I’ve been able to live alone and I’ve learned a lot about myself. I want to continue this journey and discover everything that IE University has to offer.

Why did you decide to study your specific program?

I chose the Business Administration & Data and Business Analytics dual degree because I believe that data is the future and that the integration of both data and business makes it a truly complete program. The material is very interesting and we are frequently able to incorporate our knowledge from both classes. This degree will allow me to work in different departments which include finance, marketing, investment and many other fields.

What was it like moving from the Dominican Republic to Segovia?

I had already spent a year abroad in the United States but coming here to Segovia was a completely different experience. Segovia is truly magical and has a lot to offer as a city. Since the IE University campus is located here, it allows students to completely immerse themselves in Spanish culture. The campus facilities are fantastic and the teachers are amazing as well.

How are you finding IE University’s Liquid Learning methodology?

Liquid Learning has made the learning process more flexible, and means I can manage my time better. The professors do a fantastic job in the classroom, allowing both online and in-person students to connect with each other. We do a lot of group projects and are always able to communicate successfully thanks to Zoom.

How do you balance your online classes with your free time?

I generally go to campus when we have synchronous lessons, and stay home for the videoconferences or asynchronous sessions. With classes being online, I have some more time to do things at home or around the city. Overall, online courses have become a very useful method for learning and optimizing time.

What would you say to students thinking about joining IE University next year?

I would suggest that students that come to IE University should socialize and immerse themselves in the experience as much as they can, while adhering to the COVID-19 measures. It is also very important to keep an eye on your calendar to know whether you have asynchronous, online or campus lessons. I would also recommend visiting and discovering the city so they can truly understand what life in Segovia is like.
