The Bachelor in Environmental Sciences for Sustainability: Fighting climate change with a revolutionary degree

This innovative program transcends disciplines, blending the study of environmental science with the necessary skills to design and implement sustainable projects in any field. Using hands-on, project-based learning, will help students understand biological environmental processes and the complex obstacles to sustainability. Upon graduation, they will be able to create effective scientific, social, and economic solutions.

Diving deep into the program

The focus of this program revolves around environmental sciences as well as other broad environment-related topics. It provides students with a solid scientific foundation, a comprehensive understanding of the current global social, political and regulatory environments, and proficiency in various relevant digital tools. This, in turn, will empower them to develop practical solutions to environmental and social challenges.

The Bachelor in Environmental Sciences for Sustainability stands out from the rest because it combines natural, economic, and legal sciences with technology, using a scientific approach to help students master the fundamentals of sustainability.

“We build the connection between environmental sciences, technology and social sciences, which is one of the great assets of IE University.”

As Gonzalo Delacámara—director of the Centre for Water and Climate Adaptation.

In the first year of the program, students will build a foundation that focuses on the core environmental science. This will be strengthened in the second year and by the third, they will understand the intricacies of sustainable development and how power and inequality around the globe affect it. By the end of the program, a big picture project will assess what all that students have learned, readying them to join the workforce and succeed. Once they graduate, students will become highly competitive candidates for leading employers around the world.

Four essential pillars

The Bachelor in Environmental Sciences for Sustainability has four essential pillars

  • a changing world facing global challenges;
  • a systemic approach to sustainability;
  • a multidisciplinary education to manage complexity, and;
  • a highly in-demand profile.

As the world faces overwhelming challenges, this program will empower students with a hybrid approach that combines the environmental sciences with current global issues. Students will be trained in science-backed methods while solidifying their knowledge of legal and economic principles that shape environmental policies. The program will challenge students to come up with new solutions to address the global sustainability crisis.  And finally, this program will broaden students’ minds and create broad profiles that will prepare them for their future.

“This program has been designed to equip you with all the necessary skills to have a better understanding of the Earth system and how it interacts with society, and the intended and unintended implications of human actions on natural systems and social systems at once.”

Gonzalo—an environmental expert with more than twenty-five years experience in environmental and sustainability policy.

Offering students the world

This program is for students who want to change the world and make it a better place for everyone. Gonzalo spoke passionately about the type of student that would be perfect for this program, saying, “The ideal person to study this degree would be someone with a very clear, cosmopolitan nature, with a strong sense of global citizenship, and someone who’s willing to understand some of the major challenges we’re facing as a society and knows these challenges can only be tackled if we treat them as collective action challenges.”

A green economy is the way of the future, with statistics showing that by 2030, the number of jobs it creates will jump up to 24 million. Thus, these students will have the opportunity to work as climate change specialists, ecologists, environmental health and safety specialists, or sustainability policy advisors. They will be in-demand professionals at corporations that fight for the environment, public institutions that want to build a sustainable world in the future, or even research companies that focus on environmental sciences.

This program is designed to prepare students so well that they are ready to enter the job market from day one. With all the knowledge necessary to tackle environmental problems, as well as the skills to create solutions for the global climate crisis, our students will be ready to change the world.
