If you’re a student today, you’re already managing risk—whether you realize it or not. Picking classes, applying for internships, deciding what to prioritize when deadlines stack up like Tetris blocks. Strategic thinking isn’t some distant corporate skill; it’s how smart students navigate the here and now. And that’s exactly what the IE Risk & Strategy Society is built to teach.
Founded in 2024, this student-led club brings together those who want to think sharper, plan smarter and understand how risk and strategy shape decisions in every field—from business to law to international relations.
How one student turned a study break into a strategy society
Ferdinand Pfanzelter Vetleseter, a Dual Degree student in Laws & International Relations, had a lightbulb moment during a casual study session. Chatting with friends, the idea of starting a new club came up—and Ferdinand remembered how his uncle had done the same thing at St. Andrews. One quick call later, Ferdinand had the blueprint.
“We wanted to create a bridge between students, academics, and professionals from different fields and backgrounds,” says Ferdinand. “Everyone deals with risk and strategy in their lives. Why not create a space where we can learn from each other and from real-world experts?”
And that’s how the IE Risk & Strategy Society was born.
Building strategic thinking skills beyond the classroom
From day one, the Society set the bar high. The founding team wasn’t interested in doing anything halfway. Their vision? To make this one of the most impactful and influential student-led clubs at IE University—and beyond.
So far, they’re well on their way. The launch event alone proved the demand was real. “Seeing students from across different disciplines engage that night was incredible,” Ferdinand recalls.
Here’s what’s on the agenda:
- Networking with the pros: Upcoming events feature dinners with top banks, talks with Big 4 consulting leaders, sessions with private equity CEOs, and even trips to meet politicians.
- Real-world opportunities: Members get access to internships, mentorship, and even the chance to become a talent pipeline for certain companies.
- Interdisciplinary approach: Whether you’re analyzing legal risk, geopolitical strategy, or business moves, the Society embraces how strategy crosses all fields.
In short: this isn’t just theory. It’s hands-on, career-shaping experience.
The founder’s biggest lesson—and what’s next
Launching the Society had its challenges. Ferdinand credits the support from IE University’s Campus Life team and the School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs for helping get the club off the ground.
But the toughest personal challenge? Learning to delegate. “As a first-time president, trusting others while keeping the vision intact was a huge learning curve,” he admits.
Looking ahead, the Society’s goals are ambitious: consistent top-tier events, partnerships with universities worldwide, and a global network of future leaders.
Why it matters to you
For career-driven students, building strategic thinking skills and mastering risk management for students isn’t optional—it’s how you stand out. And that’s exactly what the IE Risk & Strategy Society offers: a space where you can learn from the best, challenge yourself, and connect with a community that thinks big.
