The benefits of summer school: The most prestigious summer schools in Europe

Parents, discover how sending your child to a top summer program can foster academic growth, personal development and lasting memories in a safe, enriching environment.

The last bell of the academic year signals what is typically seen as a time for relaxation. But those driven young people who see university right around the corner may view the summer holidays as an excellent opportunity for both personal and academic growth. So, let’s explore the benefits of summer school.

For the most passionate and ambitious students excited to propel their education forward, we recommend one of the prestigious summer programs for high school students hosted by many top universities around Europe. These programs offer unparalleled opportunities to learn, meet people from around the world and explore European history and culture—all in a safe, supported environment.

Why do people go to summer school?

Well, prestigious summer schools at European universities expose young people to a diverse international community of peers and offer many academic and career advantages. This is a great chance to have an inside look at university life.

These summer programs provide a gradual introduction to university-level subjects that are typically outside the normal high school curriculum. For example, the Pre-University Summer Program at IE University provides classes and workshops covering entrepreneurship, tech and sustainability. Students in summer school programs get to learn from real professors and be exposed to ideas that can help them decide on their future study or career path.

Summer school programs are also great for developing soft skills like team formation, problem-solving and critical thinking through dynamic, hands-on learning with a diverse cohort. Participating in these courses demonstrates a commitment to personal growth and active learning—and looks great on CVs for future university and internship applications!

Aside from all that, summer schools are just plain fun! Making new friends, discovering new interests and exploring vibrant cities like Madrid and Segovia will create life-long memories.

For those parents looking for the most prestigious summer schools for their students, the choice among so many European universities can seem daunting.

Universities like the University of Amsterdam and the University of Edinburgh offer well-respected pre-university programs covering topics such as business, journalism, design, social sciences and sustainability.

IE University offers a holistic summer school experience focused on experiential learning and building essential skills for the future. With two options aimed at high school or university students, we offer a great way to prepare for the challenges and rewards of the studying and career experiences to come. Plus, we are situated in the heart of Spain, a destination in high demand thanks to its cultural, educational and economic promise.

IE University offers two distinct summer school programs to cater to different age groups: the two-week Pre-University Summer Program for 16- to 17-year-old students and the two- to six- week University Summer Program for 18- to 26-year-olds.

Both programs bring young people from around the world into the classroom with professors from our bachelor’s and master’s programs. Their classes and workshops guide students through realistic scenarios with hands-on projects like hackathons and entrepreneurship challenges.

Previous participants have cited the fun activities, like our Team-Building Olympics, as the most memorable parts of the experience. They also love the beautiful facilities in our two locations in the ancient city of Segovia and the bustling hub of Madrid.

Participants will enjoy a lot of adventures and experience life as a university student. But parents can rest assured that the security and safety of their teens is always our first priority.
