From school to the real world: Lucía’s marketing internship

Read all about Lucía's academic experience, the importance of creative freedom and how a life-changing internship helped her discover her true passions.

Lucía de Pablos has seen her childhood love for storytelling and creative expression evolve into real career opportunities. Our Bachelor in Communication & Digital Media student began an eight-month marketing internship at IE University’s School of Science & Technology, where she was able to apply this knowledge in a practical setting, gaining special insights and skills that have shaped her future career.

What made you realize that communications and digital media was the right path for you?

A picture I took of Segovia, my hometown.

I’ve always had a lot of interests but never a clear focus, which made me unsure of what field to pursue. That changed when a friend offered me some advice: “Don’t just focus on what you’re good at, but on what you’re passionate about. This is where your true path lies.”

My friend’s advice got me thinking about the moments in my life when I felt most alive. I remembered afternoons spent with my sister, improvising news broadcasts on an old video camera, editing birthday videos for friends and using my cousin’s camera during family trips. It hit me then—I was fascinated by how a moment could be captured in a single image and all these little experiences, hobbies I enjoyed so much without a second thought, were actually pieces of a puzzle that were finally coming together.

Without even realizing it, communications and digital media had been the path I was meant to follow all along. With some luck and hard work, I eventually landed an internship in the marketing department at IE University’s School of Science & Technology.

What was your first impression when you started working at IE School of Science & Technology?

From the very first day, I realized I had no idea how much work goes on behind the scenes at a university. The scale of effort put in by everyone involved in this machinery is astounding. Ultimately, having the opportunity to be a part of this team for eight months is an eye-opening experience that I value deeply.

What was your main responsibility during your marketing internship internship? What did you learn?

My main role was creating content for IE School of Science & Technology, ranging from social media posts to articles. However, what I gained from the internship went far beyond just completing tasks.

I didn’t just pick up technical skills and hands-on experience—I also learned how crucial creative freedom is in any job. The trust they placed in me to pitch my own ideas and come up with proposals was something I really appreciated and found essential for growth.

Could you tell us about a significant project you worked on?

One key project spanned two months, with each month focusing on a different theme and initiative. The first month was all about cybersecurity, and the second focused on artificial intelligence. My job was to create social media content, like producing short videos. To accomplish this, I interviewed both students and professionals in the field.

These interviews not only allowed me to learn a great deal about the topics but also improved my communication and networking skills, as I had to coordinate with several people to make it happen. On top of that, I honed my video editing skills, making sure each piece was engaging and easy for the audience to understand.

What other memorable experiences stood out?

One highlight was visiting the Robotics & AI Lab, an innovative space where students work on fascinating projects. Not only did I get to see the projects up close, but I also had the chance to meet inspiring students and learn about their ideas and creative processes. This experience helped me improve my ability to understand and communicate technical concepts in a clear, accessible way. At the same time, I produced videos showcasing these projects, which really helped to sharpen my filming and editing skills.

Tech Venture Bootcamp – 2024 Edition

I also attended events like the Tech Venture Bootcamp, a competition where students—many of whom hadn’t met before—come together to launch a startup in just a few days. Watching them organize and bring their ideas to life in such a short time taught me that with enough determination and cooperation, anything is possible. In my opinion, this was a valuable lesson about the importance of innovation and teamwork, even among strangers.

What have you gained from these experiences and your internship?

These projects and events not only allowed me to connect with professionals from different fields but gave me the chance to interview people with unique ideas and perspectives. Working at a different school than my own was also an incredibly enriching experience, as it allowed me to dive into unfamiliar disciplines and concepts. Every conversation I participated in broadened my horizons, not to mention improved my understanding of science and technology.

How has it influenced your personal and professional growth?

My eight-month marketing internship at IE School of Science & Technology was more than just work experience to me—it was a journey of personal and professional growth. I’ve learned that teamwork, creative freedom and a commitment to continuous learning are essential in any field. Above all, I’ve learned that every new experience, conversation and project is a chance to expand my perspective and become a better version of myself.

Lucía’s journey from childhood hobbies to a meaningful marketing internship at IE University is a testament to the power of following your passion. Through hands-on experience and creative freedom, she gained not only technical skills but also invaluable life lessons, proving that every step—no matter how small—brings you closer to your true path.
