Technologies that will change the world: Artificial intelligence

Fondo logo E
We published our first article in the series about technologies that will change the world, on the topic of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.

Now it’s time for artificial intelligence; a field full of challenges that will without a doubt transform every field imaginable. Researchers agree that the end-goal is to allow technology to work alongside the human brain in order to achieve greater advancements. But there are some outcomes that need to be analyzed.

Artificial intelligence involves a machine perceiving its environment and “understanding” it in order to react and succeed at one or several tasks. Due to contact with a variety of fields, AI requires exhaustive research, which inevitably means that there are many challenges ahead. However, we make huge advancements every day.

What is the potential of artificial intelligence?

Hybrid thinking

In his TED talk, Ray Kurtzweil speaks about the human brain and how it works. We have over 300 million modules in our brains, and each of these modules can learn, remember, and implement a pattern. All of these modules are organized in hierarchies which influences our own thought process. AI research is moving towards expanding these modules by adding nanobots into our brains. Several years from now, our brain could be connected to the cloud. Imagine asking Google a question and your brain processing that information…

The Machine Deep Learning revolution & outsourcing knowledge

This is key to the rapid development of AI. The use of Big Data to “educate” machines makes them smarter by allowing them the capacity to learn from their own mistakes.

This is exciting in terms of driving innovation in medicine and security, but frightening if we think long-term. It’s only a matter of time before the intellectual capacity of machines surpasses human intellect, so we must proceed with caution. Machines will be able to drive our cars, cook food, and even diagnose diseases. This is exciting, but it also raises concerns that should be at the top of our agenda. We need to start thinking about how societies will adapt to this new system.

It is important to shape a system in which the human brain and technology collaborate in order to achieve greater things for humankind and the environment, leaving a better and more sustainable world for future generations. This topic raises great challenges and we should start thinking about adapting the system to the next turning point: the AI revolution.
