Beyond entertainment: Unlocking the future of video game design

Find out how video games are changing how we learn, heal and connect.

What do a hospital, a classroom and a bustling retail store have in common? In 2025, they’ll all be using video games to solve real-world problems. The video game industry has grown beyond mere entertainment. In fact, it now influences areas like education, healthcare and even how we interact with others. Technologies like virtual and augmented reality are becoming more common. As a result, gaming is now a significant part of our digital world.

This exciting evolution inspired IE University to launch its Videogame Design and Virtual Environments track within the Bachelor in Design. This big shift inspired IE University to launch a new track: Videogame Design and Virtual Environments. It’s part of their Bachelor in Design program, and to kick it off, they held an event with some of Spain’s top gaming experts to offer a glimpse into what’s possible when creativity and technology come together. Keep reading to find out more about the future of video game design.

A launch worth leveling up for

Held at the IE Tower, the event—aptly titled “From Classroom to Console: Preparing the Future Leaders of Videogames and Virtual Worlds”—featured a distinguished panel of industry experts, including:

  • Félix Alberto Martín Gordo, Technical Director of Madrid In Game.
  • Jose Raluy, Engineering Manager at Electronic Arts.
  • Jorge Huguet Rodriguez, former CEO at PlayStation Iberia.
  • Enrique Agudo, New Media Artist.
  • Ruxandra Iancu, Computational Researcher and 50SuperReal Cofounder.

The discussion explored the transformative potential of videogame design and its impact on industries. By the end of the event, one thing was clear. This program is about how gaming can redefine the way we connect with the world. Let’s dive into some of the key points the experts made.

Gaming is no longer a pastime

It’s becoming a driving force for innovation. A recent PwC report estimating the global gaming market to reach $321 billion by 2026.

The new track builds on this principle, integrating design, storytelling and advanced technology to ensure the opportunities for graduates are vast and varied. As panelist Ruxandra Iancu noted:

This philosophy is central to the program. It encourages students to think beyond entertainment and consider how games can address societal challenges and drive progress in areas like education and healthcare.

The future of video game design should be ethical and human-centered

The panel emphasized the importance of ethical and responsible game design. “Our role as creators is to ensure that technology amplifies humanity rather than diminishing it,” said Enrique Agudo. For example, VR can be used for disaster preparedness simulations or designing tools to enhance cognitive health for seniors. In both cases, the focus is on leveraging technology for good.

Jose Raluy highlighted how advancements in AI are streamlining development processes, enabling designers to concentrate on storytelling—the core of any impactful game. “Virtual environments offer a sandbox for innovation,” he explained, underscoring the unique intersection of creativity and technology.

The true protagonists of this new track are the students themselves

The program’s interdisciplinary approach empowers them to think creatively and design with purpose. From addressing pressing societal issues to creating tools for underserved communities, the curriculum prepares students to make meaningful contributions to the field. By blending creativity, technological expertise and social awareness, the program ensures graduates are prepared to excel in the job market and shape the future of gaming and virtual environments.

“The story behind the technology defines its impact,” said Jorge Huguet Rodriguez. This sentiment encapsulates the program’s ethos—equipping students to craft stories that resonate, whether they’re developing a healthcare simulation or the next blockbuster game.

Madrid could be the new epicenter for virtual innovation

Backed by government efforts like Madrid in Game, Spain’s capital is rapidly emerging as a global hub for video games and virtual environments. The city is positioning itself as a leader in e-sports and VE development. These initiatives, coupled with IE University’s academic leadership, are solidifying Madrid’s reputation as a destination for future video game designers and innovators.

A game-changing opportunity

IE University’s Videogame Design and Virtual Environments track is designed to anticipate the needs of the gaming industry and prepare students to lead the future of video game design.

By 2025, gaming will focus on creating meaningful impact. Moreover, judging by the enthusiasm and innovation on display at the launch event, the impact of this program is bound to be extraordinary.
